Patriots of Horry Co. · Horry Roots

Capt. Benjamin Garrell was one of the local men who ferried, fed and fought for the Patriot cause. In March and May 1779 he led his company over Port’s Ferry on the Great Pee Dee and signed for the crossing himself: “9 men and 4 horses and 1 cart.” In October 1782 he supplied the Georgetown garrison, an account entered by Col. Peter Horry. The originals are held by the S.C. Department of Archives & History, in the same record series as Marion’s and Horry’s accounts. Captain Garrell is our founder’s 4th great-grandfather.
